Geolocation (geographic location) is the identification of the real-world position of an object. As a term, geolocation is used to describe the capability to detect and record where you and other people are located, or rather to say, a computer and a GPS device used by you and other people is located. Geolocation information can be obtained in many methods, such as a user’s IP address, MAC address, RFID, Wi-Fi connection location, or GPS coordinates.
As a practice of assessing or detecting the location, geolocation is related to the positioning – specify a geographic position, defined as latitude and longitude coordinates, or a less specific physical location information including country, region, city, and postal code.
Geolocation uses Global Positioning System (GPS) and other related technologies to assess and specify geographical locations. On the Internet, to assess or specify a computer’s geolocation is associating a geographic location with the Internet Protocol (IP) address. It is performed by searching the IP geolocation database.
Geolocation of IP address is involving Internet and computer’s geographic location with the Internet Protocol (IP) address. In other words, it is to determine the geographic location of an IP Address.
Geolocation of IP address can be used to identify where web visitors are coming from. This information is very useful. For example, if you have an e-commerce website, and would like to know where your potential customers are, and you might want to display different language and ads based on geographic location.
So if you know a visitor’s IP address, then you will be able to find the location of the visitor. Although you may not be able to find precise location of a visitor, but if you know the IP address, you at least can find approximate location, such as city, state, and country. You can use our geolocation tool – IP Locator to map an IP address and find the country, region (city), latitude/longitude, ISP and time zone.
